May 2012 Monthly Prayer: Justice

Each month the Church of the Larger Fellowship's Quest for Meaning chooses a different theme. The prayer I write for praying during the entire month follows that theme. This month, the theme is Justice.

 

Most Merciful and Most Compassionate teach us the ways of creating, caring for, and loving one another enough to live in merciful justice together. Let there be no strangers among us, not because we reject the stranger, but because every stranger is welcomed and made friend. When we injure one another, may our consciences awaken and may we quickly do all we can to make amends. When we turn away from each other and foster hate or fear or apathy, turn us back towards one another to meet again with reverence, with appreciation, with the courage for the hard work of forgiveness and, whenever possible, reconciliation. When we would hold back from caring, hold back from sharing and bearing one another up, open our hearts once more to living boldly in generosity and mercy. The way of merciful justice is wide, and yet we tend to stray. Most Merciful and Most Compassionate, draw us back onto the path of merciful justice in this and every day. Amen.

 

Sabbath: Blessed Rest

One of my favorite parts of Sabbath is the chance to sleep. Being awake is one of those spiritual metaphors for attention, so it sometimes seems really funny to me to awaken spiritually to sleep.

 

Reverence for life involves reverence for our selves. We are hardly living in reverence when we are exhausted all the time, or when we binge on sleep and then on sleeplessness. In a society where those who can be more productive are considered more valuable, needing sleep is often considered a weakness. Yet we all do need rest.

 

Being awake to our limitations is part of the spiritual, self-aware life. When I’m struggling accepting those limitations, it is often because I don’t think I have enough time now to do what needs to be done. But being exhausted does not exactly increase my productivity.

 

Being exhausted can send us into a hallucinatory state of being. Rest brings us back to the here and now.

 

It takes time to unlearn busyness, accept our limitations, and embrace rest as a practice of reverence. Fortunately, keeping Sabbath, especially in the lengthening Sabbaths of spring and summer, opens a window in each week for rest.

 

Sabbath: Being Without Doing

I love my lists. Lists give me a sense of control. They help me figure out priorities. They shape my days with tasks. They help me cope with a chronic illness and with underemployment. Lists keep me from being with some very uncomfortable reality and keep me doing. Lists are not bad. I am definitely a fan of the list as a tool to motivate, organize, and achieve.

 

One of the challenges of Sabbath for this habitual lover of lists is that a day stretches ahead with no lists, no losing myself in tasks. It is deeply disconcerting, disorienting so I can reorient to all that life that I say is important, the life that is achievable only with open-ended time, the life that works best in a gracious spaciousness.

 

During Sabbath I am always brushing against the ghosts of habits related to productivity and time. These ghost experiences remind me of how much my life is shaped not by wonder, or reverence, or laughter, or friendship, or even grief, but by the emptiness of worthlessness, the need to be productive.

 

For much of my life, I have connected being without doing as the state of being ill, trapped in bed, unable to participate in life. Sabbath gives me the gift of a different way of appreciating and understanding being without doing, a vibrant participation in life, access to a well of gratitude in dwelling in present blessing. Sabbath is changing how I experience the days I’m bed-bound, though it is a slow change, as the people who love me know. Having time-shifted weekly into grateful being without doing, I can have moments, even hours of such time-shifting when before I would be bored and resentful – from irreverence to reverence.
