Teach us to be gardeners of the spirit, now and in every season. Grant us the grace of good gardeners, who are concerned for and ever learning from their neighbors, who pitch in together to prepare the land, to water in the dry seasons, to harvest and to feast. In our fallow seasons, grant us gardeners’ dreams, rich with possibility, ready to be astounded and amazed with every tiny seed, every clod of crumbling earth. When we meet trouble, as every gardener does, let us remember that out of detritus we can grow splendid flowers, out of muck grow the lilies, out of what has been left behind, tomorrow grows greenly, resiliently, and hopefully new. Teach us to be gardeners of the spirit, now and in every season, turning to the wonders of the earth and giving thanks in every day. Amen.
