Mercy, how is it that we can turn away from one at the door? from one in a doorway or holding down a scrap of cardboard or a corner for shelter? How is it that we turn away from one another, from strangers who could be friends, from enemies who could be family, from those who are hungry, hurting, and alone? How is this so when we may be among that number? Mercy, open our hearts tonight to each other, and give us the courage to make room and to accept the welcome offered. Mercy, help us heed the world's wisdom teachings to live generously and love boldly and risk faithfully, tonight and every night, tomorrow and every day. Amen.
