We give thanks today for those who have been kind when we have been in trouble, for those who have shown us how to make amends, for those who have stayed by us in learning hard and painful lessons, for those who have held us when we have been defeated. Out of the gratitude we have for the kindnesses we have known, may we be kinder, today and ever day. We give thanks today for those who have been kind when we have been afraid, who have shown us mercy when we were wrong, who have been builders of peace and offerers of hospitality even while we have been far away from such faithful promises.
