For St. Patrick's Day
We give thanks tonight for Patrick, one of the saints of Ireland. When learning was in jeopardy, he was part of the movement to secure and save it. May we do the same, making our schools better, ensuring everyone has access to excellent education, and sharing the knowledge we have freely with one another. Patrick knew the evils of slavery firsthand, as a slave himself. May we carry on in making sure slavery is eliminated, not only in law, but in practice, and that every person's labor is justly appreciated and compensated. Living outside of the ties of kin and state protection, Patrick followed his calling faithfully. May we be ready to take such necessary faithful risks, sometimes foregoing what seems safe and easy for what is good and just, answering our calling for mercy's sake. Though the way before us may be unclear and though we may have to create the path to follow, may we do so with mercy, love, and hope ever in our hearts, words, and deeds, abiding in our faithful promises, now and always. Amen.
