At the beginning of the day may we embrace all the beginnings, all the newness, all the unknowns, all the not yets before they become shoulds and should nots and can and cannots. For this breath, these heartbeats at the start of morning, at least for the space of this prayer, may we embrace what has not yet started, what has not yet flowered, what is still forming in our lives. There is so much grace and space in what has not yet happened, so much goodness possible when possibilities are wide open. True, we might lean away from goodness, spin off into cruelty instead of kindness or callousness instead of generosity or selfishness instead of responsibility or any number of ways we have learned to lean away from goodness. But this is the beginning of day, a gift and a blessing, when possibilities remain wide open, which means we might make choices, might yet dedicate our day to merciful justice, to changing what is wrong and growing more of what is right, to sharing in our perfectly imperfect ways making this world more full of blessing than it is at this moment. Beloved, at the beginning of the day may we embrace the possibilities that are open for goodness' sake, and pursue them, steadily and passionately. Amen.
