As we roll once again into earth's own shadow, making this circuit around our sun, let us turn out the lights and welcome night with all the wonder it holds, all the mystery, all the beauty of moonlight and stars and soft shadows and deeper darkness that has nothing immoral or fearful about it, only the unfamiliar, the unknown, the awesome. Let us make space to listen to the music of the night, the wind moving across the earth, the sweep of wings and the scurry of nightly beings on their way. And in that making space, may we waken in wonder to our voices in the earthly choir, to how our silence makes room for what we cannot imagine, what we are not, what we cannot be. And in that making space, may our hearts open too, with awe and with joy and with gratitude, for the blessings of the night. Now let us turn back, separate out the story that keeps us afraid without our consent and let it go, finding a new old story in the splendors of the darkness, the starlight crossing astounding space, the moon reflecting the glories of the sun, the shadows erasing differences and welcoming us to the other half of our lives, to the other half of our heart's home. This, too, is a blessing. This, too, is what we are made for. Let us dwell in it and give thanks. Amen.
