Lover of Life open our hearts to be lovers of happiness - yes, that surge of ecstasy and that delight of contentment but also the happiness that is growing, learning, caring for and with others in the midst of difficulty, making a meaningful life, contributing to a common good, forgiving, making amends, repairing, healing, and hoping. Open our hearts to be lovers of happiness, knowing the many shades and meanings of that word, knowing that, like joy, it is most often in the middle of dealing with things we would otherwise consider bad, things we would not wish for, but with which we must contend, like sorrow and challenges that nearly overwhelm us, imperfect communication and outright failures. Lover of Life let us not make the mistake of hollowing happiness to the narrowest meaning of ecstasy by separating it from the challenges of life, and leaving it to the moments of celebration, but to remember and know happiness in the happening of life, in the middle of the muddle and messiness that is. Open our hearts to be lovers of happiness, living in the now that is, perfectly imperfect as we are, with the opportunities to do what is good and what is necessary, to live a kind and generous and genial life right now, in this very day. May we be happy and help others to be happy, in the fullness of the word, creating the road of hope as we travel it. Amen.
