For Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Beloved we are called each and every day to aid in transforming injustice into truly merciful justice, to change hate and rage into love and strength to work together, in transforming fear and the reasons we are afraid into a more peaceful world using our creativity for goodness' sake. All this, with humility and with reverence, to be done all our lives. Sometimes that seems impossible, Beloved, and demands us of us great struggle and effort within ourselves as well as in our communities. Love help us with the courage to keep going, to know the truest failure is the one where we don't learn and don't try again to do what is right. Help us cultivate the discipline and the creative joy needed to answer this daily calling, the habits of hope and also attentive listening and attentive speaking, attentive doing and attentive dreaming. Love help us not be turned around by weariness or discouragement, by another's hatred or ignorance, by injustice or by shiny distractions. Help us not be turned around by political divisions and by social failures, by one of our greatest strengths -- our diversity -- and by the racism and xenophobia that divides us with fear so easily. Love help us not be turned around each and every day in answering our calling in small and medium and big ways, as we care for one another and this earth, as we visit the sick and the imprisoned, as we work together for better laws and kinder communities, as we carry on with wonderment and awe and joy for the beauty that is and can be, for the love that is and that we cultivate together, for the happiness that can be when merciful justice and love and the gift of each other is not denied by word or law or deed. Amen.
